Terrible episode today in Washington where a man showed up in front of the gates of the Israeli embassy and set himself on fire, transforming himself into a terrible human torch. The man was saved by the immediate intervention of American secret service agents guarding the diplomatic headquarters in the north-west of the US capital.

In fact, the uniformed officers immediately intervened with the fire extinguisher, extinguishing the flames that had engulfed the man and then called the emergency medical services for treatment. The man was stabilized on the spot by paramedics who intervened shortly after and was finally rushed to hospital where he was admitted. According to initial information , his condition is very serious and his life is at risk.

As confirmed by the district fire brigade officials and local authorities, the accident occurred in the very early afternoon of Sunday 25 February, around 1pm. The man apparently arrived on site with his car, found parked not far away . He then got out, headed towards the gates of the Israeli embassy and in an instant he set himself on fire right on the lawn where hundreds of Israeli flags stand.

In addition to the emergency health services and the police, the firefighters also responded to the scene. Agents of the uniformed division of the US Secret Service also requested an immediate explosives search of the man's car which was carried out by the Washington Metropolitan Police. The bomb squad checked the suspect car but found no hazardous materials.

“An adult male was transported by firefighters and emergency health services to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. We are working with other security agencies to investigate the incident” explain the local police.

At the moment the identity of the injured person and the motivation for the terrible act have not been clarified but a similar incident occurred in December, when a pro-Palestinian protester set himself on fire in front of the Israeli consulate in Atlanta.
