Taurianova , a town in the Gioia Tauro plain, in the province of Reggio Calabria, is the Book Capital of 2024 . The choice made by the Jury of the Ministry of Culture, chaired by Pierfranco Bruni, and composed of Incoronata Boccia, Gerardo Casale, Antonella Ferrara and Sara Guelmi, who had underlined in the motivations the great potential of Taurianova's project, was confirmed. “Taurianova's project – it is said in the motivations – was awarded because it represents, for a small reality, the path to growth or even rebirth through the creation of cultural, material, immaterial and value-based infrastructures, capable of radiating their effects virtuous also in the surrounding area”.

In the reasons underlying the choice, taken unanimously, we read that the Jury “identified in the project presented by the Municipality of the Piana di Gioia Tauro, also due to the historical and geographical context, the opportunity to generate an example of redemption pedagogy cultural, civil and social”. “On 6 February – explains President Bruni – therefore three days before the rumors appeared in the press, we held the last meeting of the Jury and we unanimously voted on the Taurianova project. The choice was made in particular on the basis of the impact social aspect of the project proposal relating to a territory that has an extraordinary need for support from a cultural point of view. The decision was taken in coherence – adds Bruni – with what UNESCO defines as the intrinsic value of the cultural and creative sector in terms of social cohesion, ability to generate educational resources, personal well-being and economic growth”.

The municipalities of Trapani, Grottaferrata, San Mauro Pascoli and Tito – which were vying for the designation as Italian Book Capital 2024 – are considering whether to appeal against the choice made by the jury of the Ministry of Culture which awarded Taurianova. The mayor of Tito (Potenza), Graziano Scavone, told ANSA.

“A storm in a teacup”: thus the mayor of Taurianova Roy Biasi on the possibility that the other municipalities competing for the assignment of the title of Book Capital 2024 will appeal for the assignment of the title by the ministry commission of Culture. “There is an informal communication of the victory – added Biasi – it is clear that something has leaked out and consequently the classic storm in a teacup was unleashed. The Commission had already deliberated for some time, had recorded the minutes and the minutes had been deposited. From this point of view I don't think there is any kind of problem.”
