The body of a man was found in the waters of the Po river between Dosolo and the hamlet of Riva di Suzzara, in the province of Mantua. The alarm went off around 12 today, Thursday 22 February, and shortly afterwards the firefighters were on site to recover the body. This is Franco Simonazzi , a 79-year-old retired fisherman residing in Gualtieri, in the Reggio Emilia area. Investigations into his death are underway, with investigators having already ruled out the possibility of self-harm. It would be more likely, however, that it was an accident or a fall into the water following an illness.

The discovery of Franco Simonazzi's body

Simonazzi's lifeless body was spotted by two fishermen , father and son, who had gone out by boat in the morning as they usually do. Near the bank of the Po river, one of the two noticed a man's face on the surface of the water and an arm leaning on a branch of a plant. At that point, as reported by the Gazzetta di Mantova , the call for help went out.

The firefighters from Mantua and Suzzara, the healthcare personnel and the carabinieri from Gonzaga and Suzzara arrived on site around midday. Once brought to shore, the body was inspected by the medical examiner who, upon initial inspection, did not detect the presence of obvious signs of violence .

The investigators' hypotheses

The victim is Franco Simonazzi, a former administrative employee with a passion for fishing. The 79-year-old apparently left home yesterday morning with his equipment and had not returned. At the point where he was found the current would be quite strong.

The police are still investigating Simonazzi's death. The body is now in the Suzzara morgue at the disposal of the magistrate who could decide to carry out further investigations . The hypothesis of a self-harming gesture would have been excluded, as well as that of a violent death. It is likely that the 79-year-old fell into the water following an accident, he may have slipped or been taken ill.
