Ban on funerals in Mazara del Vallo for Gaetano Riina, Totò's brother. But Don Nicola Misuraca remembers it like this: “This is a mass that I wanted to offer, a solemnity for dad – he said, turning to his daughter Concetta Riina – for our brother Gaetano and I will pray for him”.

Mass in memory of Gaetano Riina

“Today we are also here for our beloved brother Gaetano. Not having been able to have the funeral, we pray for him because we are and must be a church that listens and wipes away every tear, a church with which we share joys and sorrows .”

These are the words pronounced this morning at the 11.30 mass by Don Nicola Misuraca, rector of the cemetery church of Mazara del Vallo. Don Misuraca refers to Gaetano Riina, brother of the “boss of bosses” Totò Riina , who died on Thursday in Mazara at the age of 90 following an illness: he was still under arrest for mafia association even if from 2021 he had been transferred to house arrest and should have finish serving his sentence next May.

Following his death, the Police Commissioner of Trapani Salvatore La Rosa ordered a ban on holding public funerals and also decided the route that the hearse had to travel from Riina's home to the cemetery where he was buried, suddenly and private, around 8.00 pm last Friday 23 February.

This morning however, even though the ban on celebrating funeral rites in memory of Gaetano Riina was imposed on you, for reasons of public order, Don Nicola Misuraca decided to celebrate a mass anyway inside the church of the Mazarese cemetery in the presence of his wife , of his daughter Concetta, of family and friends. About twenty were present.

During the homily Don Misuraca underlined that “we will not be judged by the Church but by God who no one can replace . He is the only judge of our life. Christ died for everyone, he shed his blood for everyone, no one excluded. To the extent that someone passes judgment on the person's soul, this is in sin. For example, if I commit theft, I must be condemned and this is a judgment on behavior but the judgment of the soul belongs to no one but God. This is why our prayer must be addressed to everyone and no one can judge. And I add that if I commit theft but have done many good works, God will judge me on those and not on the only bad act I have committed in my life.”

At the end of the celebration the priest wanted to pray “for Gaetano and for all our dear deceased” and also carried out a sort of funeral rite by incensing and sprinkling with holy water a photo of the deceased Riina placed on a table in front of the altar . “This is a mass that I wanted to offer, a solemnity for dad – says the priest turning to his daughter Concetta Riina – for our brother Gaetano and I will pray for him both next Sunday and until the end of the month. Now we want to bless him.”

At the end of the celebration Don Misuraca recalled that “at the back of the church, a piece of paper was placed on the table in which the family and friends of our brother Gaetano could write a thought. The paper will be given to the family who will then thank you.” Furthermore, after the end of the mass, the priest together with family and friends went to the grave of Gaetano Riina where, together with the family, he blessed the body.
