Former BR Barbara Balzerani dies in Rome

Former terrorist Barbara Balzerani has died in Rome. Born in Colleferro in 1949, Balzerani joined the Red Brigades in 1975: she never regretted or dissociated herself but declared deep regret “for those who were affected” by the terrorists. In 2006 she was granted parole.

Balzerani took part in numerous Red Brigade murders, including that of Girolamo Minervini, and in the ambush in Via Fani.

In 1981 he participated in the kidnapping of NATO General James Lee Dozier. Balzerani was among the last Red Brigades to be arrested: she was captured on June 19, 1985, together with Gianni Pelosi.

For this reason it was nicknamed the 'red pimpernel'. She never regretted or dissociated herself but was critical of the period of armed struggle: in 1993 she declared that she felt sorry for the many who were affected by terrorism and in 2003 she criticized the activity of the so-called New Brigades. In 2006 she was granted parole: he was released again, having served his sentence, in 2011.
