Geolier and Guè (LaPresse)
Geolier won the fourth evening of the Sanremo festival , that of the covers, bringing a medley that included “Brivido”, “O' first love” and “Chiagne” together with Guè, Luchè and Gigi D'Alessio. The Ariston whistled when Amadeus mentioned his name, but it was probably not a real protest against the Neapolitan rapper, but more a cheer for Angelina Mango and the demonstration's bond with Pino Mango. It is not uncommon for Ariston to grumble and protest for choices that they consider far from their own taste, and perhaps the point is precisely the taste of those in the room. The Ariston can hardly fill up with the rap audience and the new scene in particular.
The rapper of “I p' me, tu p' te” did something this evening that perhaps we have never seen on that stage where, however, the cream of rap has performed. Geolier brought real rap, the kind that goes around and is loved by the public – a varied public -, he brought with him, in addition to a Neapolitan institution like D'Alessio, two respected rappers like Guè and Luchè to whom he also added a gem that enthusiasts will surely have appreciated, namely a sample of a historical piece like Still DRE by Dr Dre and Snopp Dogg. In short, Geolier has taken it upon himself to bring the canon of rap to the Ariston stage and if Amadeus has also legitimized the genre to the festival mainstream, the Ariston audience still looks at him like the journalists looked at the kids from the suburbs in L'odio di Kassovitz. In short, at Ariston it still feels like being in Thoiry.
Evidently those who don't follow rap and have never heard of this boy in his early twenties, who blocked Sanremo several times and conquered 2023 ratings, are starting to realize, firsthand, the love that surrounds him. We will not delve into how it is possible, today, not to know who Geolier is – even just as a phenomenon -, especially if you follow Italian music, but Sanremo also serves to clear certain things to another audience. Last year many discovered Lazza, another big name on the scene, but these foreign bodies arouse curiosity and are fine, at least as long as they make music that we understand, choosing the more pop side and, above all, coming second. But Geolier continues to arrive first and this is destabilizing. Don't worry, Geolier is not a foreign body, the strangers are those who have not yet understood that the discography has changed and rap has become the pop of the 90s.
