Investigation into Vannacci for expenses in Moscow. Wrath of the League: 'Clockwork investigation'

A few days after the release of his new book and – some hypothesize – the announcement of his candidacy for the European elections in June, general Roberto Vannacci is on the receiving end. He will have to answer to charges of embezzlement and fraud, following the results of an inspection carried out by the Defense General Staff and transmitted to the Military Prosecutor's Office regarding his period as an Italian military attaché in Moscow .

“I'm not worried. I'm very calm and I continue on my way with my head held high”, says the officer, while for his lawyer the office activities are “already accurately reconstructable by the interested party as well as completely regular”. And the League also stands in his defense, speaking of a “clockwork investigation. He is a man loved by the citizens and uncomfortable in the Palace. Since they are unable to intimidate him in any other way, they try with investigations and threats. Our respect in it does not change, on the contrary it increases”.

Service allowances for family members received illicitly (because his wife and daughters were not in Moscow in the period considered), an expense of 9 thousand euros linked to the unauthorized company car, reimbursements for the organization of events and dinners which in reality did not take place would be carried out. These, reports the Corriere della Sera, are the inspectors' objections to the general for his service in Russia, between February 2021 and May 2022, when he was expelled from the Kremlin together with 23 other Italian diplomats and military experts, in response to the similar move by the Draghi government after the invasion of Ukraine. The military prosecutor's office is prosecuting for embezzlement and fraud.

And the report of the ministerial inspectors would have been sent, to the extent of its competence, also to the ordinary prosecutor's office and to the Court of Auditors. A formal investigation was already pending against the para-writer initiated by his superiors to ascertain any disciplinary infractions in relation to the contents of his bestseller (over 200 thousand copies sold) 'The world in reverse '. The investigations in this case follow complex bureaucratic procedures and cannot be concluded quickly. He risks sanctions ranging from suspension of employment from one month to a year to “termination of detention”, which is equivalent to expulsion from the service; Loss of rank through removal is also possible.

The new stumble finds Vannacci still struggling with his double life. On duty at the Army Palace, as Chief of Staff of the Land Operational Forces Command. In his free time he goes on a promotional tour for his literary works.

Next Friday he will stop in Milan. We need to present his second work, to be released on March 12 (Piemme editore): 272 pages (on Amazon on sale for 18.90 euros) to tell the story of “The life and values of a raider general”. What its values are, in addition to the books, is said by the “Committee promoting the thoughts expressed in the book 'The world upside down' by General Roberto Vannacci”, which may seem like a real electoral committee, complete with membership (30 euro the annual fee to become a member) and territorial coordinators.

The person who will not become a member is certainly the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto , who last August defined the concepts expressed by the general as “ramblings”, stigmatizing the “fuss that every single piece of news on the topic concerning his position raises”. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has instead repeatedly expressed his appreciation for the officer, leaving the door open for a candidacy on the Northern League lists for the European elections. And here is the League screaming about the “clockwork investigation”.

An exit that can be seen in the lively skirmishes with FdI in view of the elections this spring. A name like Vannacci would in fact appeal to the centre-right electorate. The general, however, has not yet dissolved his reservations. Domenico Leggiero, president of the Military Observatory, spoke a lot with him in recent hours. “He is dejected – he explains – but determined to safeguard his image, his work and his honesty. These are baseless accusations made by the ministry to politically burn the general. But he will carry on”. It will soon be seen whether he will leave the uniform for the prospect of a seat in Europe, with the League or with others. As a good raider, the general does not launch an assault without first having carefully studied the objective, the difficulties on the ground and the possible escape routes.
