At least in the last years of his hiding Matteo Messina Denaro had not left Sicily . He himself revealed this in his last interrogation before the Milan prosecutors Paolo Guido, Piero Padova, Gianluca De Leo and the commander of the ROS Luciano Arcidiacono last 7 July. Matteo Messina Denaro died on September 25th while he was hospitalized in L'Aquila, a few months after his arrest by the CrimOr and GIS carabinieri.
In the last interrogation of last summer Matteo Messina Denaro speaks for two hours, reveals things but never regrets and above all he never mentions the names of his loyalists. Unless they're already dead.
The Castelvetrano boss reveals that he has been in Palermo, as well as in his Campobello di Mazara . And when the deputy prosecutor Paolo Guido asked him what his life was like in Palermo, Matteo Messina Denaro replied like this: ” Free, like the one I had in Campobello , because for better or worse…for better or worse you staggered the one in Campobello, because you had fertile ground in Campobello, but generally I always live that life, that is, the same printout, the same facsimile, in another area, in another context, but it was always the same”. But what was the facsimile of Matteo Messina Denaro's life?
The Palermo prosecutor: “Messina Denaro stopped at a checkpoint 7 years ago, he was not recognized”
The life of Matteo Messina Denaro in Sicily while on the run
The Castelvetrano boss could count on something that the other Cosa Nostra fugitives did not have: the investigators were looking for him using the only identikit obtained from a photo of him from thirty years ago, when he began his hiding in 1993. This means that Matteo Messina Denaro could walk around the streets of Palermo without anyone recognizing him.
“ Like a tree in the middle of the forest ”, as he revealed in his first interrogation after the arrest: this was his strategy used to hide and he explained it by invoking a Jewish proverb.
Last July the boss also revealed that he had had relationships with people, both close to Cosa Nostra and outside its environment. Because as he himself specifies: I had to “manage my inaction, but I had to continue my life, I couldn't vegetate , while breathing, to do what? I had my own mental ideal”.
And again: “My friendships don't begin to end only in the world that you consider mafia.” But who did Matteo Messina Denaro talk to and what did he do in Palermo?
Dental care in Palermo in a practice recommended by a friend
In his last interrogation, the boss explained that he had already gone to Palermo more than 13 years ago to undergo dental treatment . At the dentist, recommended by a friend, he introduced himself with the surname Corseri “or Curseri I no longer remember”. And then he added: “They recommended this dentist to me. I had the documents.” Nobody had given him a patient card: “Every time I went there I paid 80 euros for a dental hygiene cleaning.”
The boss told prosecutors that the dentist had asked him: “Are those his teeth?”. And he replied like this: “Look, I have been accused of many things in my life, but I had never yet heard that I stole teeth”. And everyone in the dentist's office started laughing.
When he discovered he had colon cancer
Matteo Messina Denaro then talked about his illness, how he discovered the colon tumor and all the previous visits that led him to the La Maddalena clinic, where he was arrested on 16 January 2023. The Castelvetrano boss told prosecutors that his digestion had stopped: this pushed him to see a doctor to perform a colonoscopy . On this occasion he immediately discovered that he had a tumor.
However, the boss did not reveal where he had the medical exam because “I don't want to be disgusted by people, even if they didn't know it was me: saying this means ruining them”. But then he added: “I knew on my own that there was a good doctor in Mazara, why did I know that on my own? I can tell you this.” And again: “I knew through a cousin of mine, who was Head of Orthopedics at the Mazara hospital, that there was this very good doctor.” Matteo Messina Denaro's cousin, who helped him with his treatment by recommending another “good doctor”, is called Salvatore Messina Denaro .
He is a first cousin, their respective fathers are brothers. The cousin – explained the boss in the interrogation – had already spoken to him about this doctor 7 or 8 years earlier when Matteo Messina Denaro had turned to him to ask for information for a friend. Then the boss mentioned his cousin's name for just one reason: “You can't arrest my cousin, he's dead. (…) If my cousin had been alive I wouldn't have told you this.” When Matteo Messina Denaro goes to the hospital in Mazara del Vallo he already goes there under the name of Andrea Bonafede.
Matteo Messina Denaro explained that he had been hospitalized in Mazara del Vallo and that no one went to visit him: “There was Covid, no one could come in. This was one thing that helped me: no one could come, not to me, to no one , in fact no one was coming.”
From here he will then be forced to move his care to the La Maddalena clinic in Palermo, where the arrest took place.
Matteo Messina Denaro's tattoos done in Palermo
During the interrogation Matteo Messina Denaro also spoke about his tattoos: ” I got them in Palermo “. On his left arm the boss had drawn a date in Roman numeral: 8-10-1981. “A very important date for me, to which I am attached.” Another tattoo had the words: “To Augusta for Augusta.” And finally the last one: ” To glory through suffering “. The boss then revealed that he got these three tattoos between 2006 and 2009. This means that even in these three years Matteo Messina Denaro had never left his Sicily.
