“The posters on the climate crisis are from the Green and Left Alliance”: Bonelli and Fratoianni towards the European elections

European elections 2024

Below we publish an open letter from Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni, the leaders of the Green and Left Alliance. A letter in which they claim the posters that have appeared in recent days in our cities, posters that show what Italy will be like in a handful of years if we do not combat climate change. A letter to open the campaign towards the European elections.

You will certainly have seen some posters around Italian cities, with these slogans and the somewhat crude (it's true) images of the main Italian cities hit by the consequences of floods, drought, or rampant poverty.

We saw that Fanpage noticed it and that a debate was created on social media around the images. While some expressed appreciation for the initiative, others criticized it as excessive.

We write this letter to say that those posters are from the Left Green Alliance.

We decided to open the European election campaign like this, with images created using artificial intelligence, but damn concrete.

The political structures of Europe that will emerge from the June vote will truly determine life in Italy and Europe for the next 50 or 60 years. In fact, never before in this historical period have choices been decisive.

We still have very little time to reverse the course of a train that has unfortunately already left and is heading towards environmental and social disaster.

The limit of a 1.5 degree increase in temperature is almost exceeded, we must reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 and reach climate neutrality in 2050, just as it is urgent to stop the inequalities that are causing millions of new poor people every day.

Add to this the war and skyrocketing military spending.

Our generation is called to intervene to change a destiny that seems sealed. It should have already been done yesterday and it wasn't done. Then the best time to do it is today.

Please note: we only used some possible images of a possible nightmare, not even that far away in time. The right and the right-wing megaphones often call it ideological terrorism, but they are the climate deniers. But let them know that we could have used images of war, which neither Macron nor Von Der Layen have ruled out in the last few hours; just as we could have talked about recent research from the University of New Mexico, which ascertained the presence of microplastics in the placenta of human beings and in the arteries. Products from the food industry that have entered the food chain and which, according to scientists, are most likely causing an increase in inflammatory and tumor pathologies that affect younger people. If ours is ideological terrorism, these are the dramatic realities that people live and to which a guilty policy asks us to turn a blind eye.

Instead, we ask everyone to open their eyes, to change and to determine a new future, immediately.

And to change, as we know, it is necessary first of all to dream and have the courage to dare. By going to vote, mainly, to allow a future to be built together with renewables, quality agriculture, the protection of the territory together with safe and non-precarious work, widespread public health, public education and research guaranteed everywhere , peace and rights for all. Let's dare together?
